I was born in the North East of England but grew up in Norfolk surrounded by Thetford’s immense manmade pine forest. Over the years this has provided a rich ever changing playground of inspiration. From the organic nature of the forest with it’s constant growth and decay to the mystery of what was once a very different landscape of ancient Stone Age flint mines followed by a thriving Anglo Saxon culture.
At the age of twenty four having made a visit to the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich I stumbled upon the fantastic ceramic displays of Hans Coper. Knowing very little about ceramics I felt in some way connected with the language of this art. The urge to understand lead me back into education eventually under the instruction of one of Hans Coper’s students, Geoffrey Swindell.
Since my Degree I have worked mainly within ceramics and now find myself focusing more on developing my own work and style. Current work is in the form of vessels all fired to stoneware temperature, the surfaces are heavily worked with oxides, slips and glazes to achieve an ancient stone like finish. These vessels exist somewhere between pottery and sculpture.
By connecting with the material, each piece is a complex and personal journey from start to finish. Conversations take place where accident and decision making organically interact this allows the spirit of the process to shine through.
